Here are the Absolutely Fabulous Reasons you need to see “La Cage Aux Folles” at the Stratford Festival!

1. Better Than Broadway:

One of Toronto’s most respected reviewers, Christopher Hoile, wrote this: “I’ve seen the musical twice before, including the original Broadway production in 1983. In the present production, the singing is better, and the acting is more finely nuanced.

“Stratford regulars Steve Ross and Sean Arbuckle as the central male couple give outstanding performances that handily eclipse those I’ve seen.”

2. Hilarious Comedy:

Brace yourself for nonstop laughter as you follow the characters’ hilarious escapades in the Stratford Festival’s “La Cage Aux Folles,” a playful and fun-filled story about love, family, and acceptance.

3. Spectacular Performances:

You’ll witness jaw-dropping performances by the talented cast that will transport you into the glamorous world of St. Tropez in 1978.

4. The Heartwarming Storyline:

Get ready to be moved by the touching storyline about personal acceptance and human dignity that celebrates love in all its beautiful forms.

Harvey Fierstein, who wrote the musical’s book, told the New York Times: “What we want people to go home with is a reaffirmation of relationships….A family does not have to be blood relations; it’s people who come together and take care of each other.”

5. Incredible Costumes:

From glittering sequins to luxurious feathers, the extravagant costumes in “La Cage Aux Folles” at the Stratford Festival will make you wish you could raid their wardrobe.

Ontario Stage reviewer Kelly Monaghan noted: “I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that perhaps the real stars of the show are the costumes by David Boechler. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that they cost more than the rest of the production put together. They are quite simply amazing.”

6. Tony Award-Winning Musical Numbers:

The original 1983 production of “La Cage Aux Folles” received 6 Tony awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. Reviews of the Stratford production agree that Steve Ross’ performance of the show’s best-known song, “I Am What I Am,” is worth the price of admission.

7. The Choreography!:

Be prepared to be dazzled by Cameron Carver’s visceral and sophisticated choreography that will melt away your worries, have you tapping your toes and maybe even dancing in the aisles.

8. Unforgettable Memories for the Whole Family:

“The Globe and Mail’s J. Kelly Nestruck wrote: “If you’re looking for a feel-good show for the whole family this summer, “La Cage aux Folles” is just the ticket.”

A dear friend of mine saw it with her 14-year-old daughter and said the show was an unforgettable experience that left a mother and daughter with memories they’ll cherish forever.
