The classiest place in Stratford, hands down, but not snobby, thanks to the quietly elegant charm of owner James Morris. You can dine in the original River Room and delight in the full menu, or do like many smart Stratford types (including artistic director Des McAnuff) and step back into the Sophisto Bistro, where for $55 you can have a divinely smoky plate of local charcuterie, followed by a zesty chili-rubbed quail and end with an inventive and beautifully presented plate of Canadian cheeses. Either way, you win.

"Neil Baxter sent out an extra little bit of excitement taken from the main [Rundle's] restaurant menu: 'A tartare of lightly smoked salmon garnished with Florence fennel and sour apple, and salmon roe', plus a plate of 'Shrimp, Dungeness Crab and Cucumber Roll with orange and ginger essence, and tobika (flying fish roe) coloured with wasabi. Both dishes were stunning in their presentation and delicious.

4 Stars - Only two reviews but this comment is noteworthy as their wine list isn't available online, or at least I couldn't find it. "The bistro wines are affordable and was surprisingly nice to drink back (it's not just plonk)"

It's a prix fixe and here's what theatre critic Richard Ouzounian wrote: "Three light yet scrumptious courses for $49.95 with some excellent but affordable wine.... The assorted charcuterie is a fine starter, all the main courses are wonderful and the artisanal cheese plate is top of the line."

"Dessert offered the night's only true "wow" moment, however. A wine gelatin with apple sorbet and fresh fruit was a punchy, pleasant marvel, an array of tartness and textures with just the right mix of sweet. There was a spoon duel for the last vestiges.

The evening's capper was a cheese plate featuring mostly local cheese with a Quebec offering or two. Served with our third helping of the restaurant's outstanding sourdough bread and wickedly salted butter, it was a savoury exclamation point to end things.
